Applied Science BTEC
The Pearson Level 3 AAQ Qualification BTEC National in Applied Science, Extended Certificate (1 A Level equivalent) is a broad reaching course that enables you to study the key fundamental principles and applications of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, as well as carrying out practical scientific procedures and techniques.
You will also have the opportunity to explore recent and relevant contemporary issues in science, developing and deepening your research skills, data handling and presentation of scientific information.
Entry Requirements
A grade 5:5 in Combined Science and grade 5 in English and Maths is desirable.
What will I Study?
Unit 1 Principles and Applications of Biology includes learning about the structure and function of cells and tissues and biological molecules. You will also learn about cellular transport and enzyme activity.
Unit 2 Principles and Applications of Chemistry includes learning about electronic structure, bonding and structure and periodicity. You will also learn about physical and organic chemistry and the application in industrial processes.
Unit 3 Principles and Applications of Physics includes understanding waves and optical fibres and learning about forces in transportation and Newton's Laws of Motion. You will also study electrical circuits and the transfer of energy.
Unit 4 Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques involves undertaking techniques to prepare solutions and determine concentrations and purity. You will use biological procedures to investigate concentration and distribution of biological components. Physical procedures will be undertaken to examine energy transfer. The unit concludes with a personal review of your personal development of scientific skills for laboratory work.
Unit 5 Contemporary Issues in Science allows you to investigate contemporary scientific issues that impact the global population and environment. You will examine the effect different organisations have on contemporary science and understand how to evaluate and report scientific information.
Which exam board is used and how will I be assessed?
The exam board used is Pearson Edexcel. There are five units taught across the course. Three are examined units: Unit 1, 2 and 3.
These units will be assessed through three examinations of 50 marks each lasting 1 hour. The papers will include a range of question types, including multiple choice, calculations, short answer and extended open response. These question types will assess knowledge and understanding of the content in the units. You will need to explore and relate your answers to the contexts and data presented. External assessment (50%)
There are two internally assessed units: Unit 4 and 6, which are examined by Pearson Set Assignment Briefs (PSAB).
Where could this subject take me?
You will develop the ability to practically apply scientific concepts, which is beneficial to the analytical approach of related degrees. Critical thinking and independent learning helps students to be better prepared for the self-directed learning approach used in higher education and become more open-minded to learning. Research and extended writing skills alongside the other skills, creates a good foundation for academic success.
Combined with other relevant courses this course could lead to a wide variety of careers including laboratory technician, forensic science, nursing, physiotherapy, paramedic science, sports coaching, radiography, biomedical science, and psychology.

Independently reading around science subjects, keeping in touch with modern science (documentaries, journal/newspaper articles, podcasts, etc) will help deepen your understanding of science and ensure you have a firm grasp of the key concepts which we study, this is essential for Unit 6 in particular.
